Mr. Clemson came to the Foothills of South Carolina when, in 1838, he married Anna Maria Calhoun, daughter of South Carolina's famous statesman, John C. Calhoun. The first born of You've Got MAIDS founders was born on Calhoun Street...another amazing coincidence???
When Thomas Clemson died on April 6, 1888, it set in motion a series of events that marked the start of a new era in higher education in the state of South Carolina, and ultimatlely the introduction of You've Got MAIDS to the South. Mr. Clemson left most of his estate to be used to establish a college that would teach scientific agriculture and the mechanical arts to the young people of South Carolina.
